Ayurvedic Drug for Urogenital Health

--- by Sheela Rani Chunkath

For men over 50, Chandraprabha vati is a useful drug to be familiar with. Those who have any type of prostate enlargement will benefit greatly from it. Today, with increasing longevity, the incidence of prostate cancer and benign prostate disease is on the increase. Taking 2 tablets of Chandraprabha vati, one in the morning and one in the evening will prevent and keep the disease in check. My father, now 83 years old, has been taking this drug ever since he was warned that he may be having the beginnings of benign prostate disease. The free flow of urine is often impaired with age and Chandraprabha vati is very helpful in restoring normal flow.

Chandraprabha vati is also useful in treating other diseases of the urogenital tract in both men and women. It is helpful in the treatment of diabetes, as according to Ayurvedic diagnosis, frequent urination is among other things both the cause and effect of diabetes.

Chandraprabha vati is also useful where stones are suspected to be present in the urinary tract. Some ayurvedic vaidyars find it useful while treating jaundice and painful menstruation. Functioning of the urogenital tract will be greatly improved by the use of Chandraprabha vati. This drug helps almost all ailments affecting that system.

Chandraprabha vati is made from purified guggulu, cow’s urine, triphala, iron, Acorus calamus (sweet flag or vasambu in Tamil), mushta (Cyperus rotundus), Andrographis paniculata (nilavembu in Tamil), devadaru, turmeric, tree turmeric, the three myrobalans, the three pungents (sukku, milagu and thippili), the three salts (induppu, kalluppu and sea salt), the three aromatics (cardamom, cinnamon bark and cinnamon leaf) etc.

Since guggulu is an important ingredient, the drug should be procured from a reputed ayurvedic manufacturer. Guggulu is a drug which has rejuvenating properties and its addition to the chandraprabha vati formulation makes it an invaluable drug. This drug is one of the fifty that has been included in the village health nurse’s kit put together when I was Health Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu.

The formulation for Chandraprabha vati can be had from the classical Ayurvvedic tesxt Bhaisajya Ratnavalli which records the materia medica and formulations of ayurvedic pharmacopeia.

While I started this article saying that this drug is useful for men over 50, I shall end it saying that in my household my aunt who is 90 takes this drug as a prophylactic after recovering from a stroke. This drug is truly versatile and needs to be popularized so that unnecessary use of antibiotics can be avoided.
